Happy Baisakhi– The festival of Baisakhi also famous by another name Vaisakhi is a harvest festival celebrated in different regions of India. Mostly it is celebrated by the Sikh community around the world. This year the festival of Baisakhi will be observed on 14th April i.e Friday. The day holds a significant role in the Sikh community and is observed as Sikh New Year as per the Solar calendar.
Although, for the Sikh community Baisakhi is not just limited to harvest but also a religious festival. Back in 1699, on 30th March, Guru Gobind Singh made a ‘pure’ Sikh community named Khalsa. It is believed that he removed the inequality between lower and high-class communities and regarded every human being as equal. The Guru tradition that was prevalent in the Sikh community was put to an end. Guru Granth Sahib was then established as an eternal guide.
In 1699 on Vaisakhi, Guru Gobind asked his followers to sacrifice their life for the Lord. As per ancient stories, 5 people are said to have volunteered and sacrificed their lives. They were later known as ‘panj piaras’. On this day devotees visit gurudwaras to seek blessing and prosperity. Langars are conducted at different places where anyone can eat. In this, kada prasad (wheat halwa) is given to the public, it symbolises sweet beginnings.
During the celebrations, people wear bright, vibrant clothes. Bhangra (Punjabi Folk Dance) is performed. The celebration brings communities and families together. Fairs or say Baisakhi melas are also organised in many parts of the country. The festivities also include nagar kirtans consisting of chanting and singing the holy book, Guru Granth Sahib.
