Birsa Munda Jayanti is celebrated every year on 15 November in India, especially in Jharkhand, and also called Adivasi Gaurav Diwas. He was born on 15 November 1875 in Ulihatu village of Jharkhand. This great son of the Indian soil who led a struggle for tribal rights, was a great freedom fighter and inspiration for the whole tribal community. Birsa Munda organized tribal society against the British rule and the unjust laws made by them and fought to protect them. He led a movement called ‘Ulgulan’ in the fight for the rights of the tribal society, which aimed to protect land and cultural heritage.
Since his childhood days, he had seen atrocities happening with his society. He opposed exploitation of tribal society at the hands of British colonizers and local landlords. Birsa Munda filled the tribal society with understanding of their rights and a sense of self-respect. He organised the tribal society and led the struggle and raised his voice against the British rule. His movement was regarding demand for land rights, cultural preservation and justice of the tribals.
The ‘Ulgulan’ movement led by Birsa Munda from 1899 to 1900 was a grave cause of concern for the British. Though the British army suppressed the rebellion, arrested Birsa, and stopped the movement, Birsa’s ideas inspired various future leaders. Birsa Munda is still a cultural icon of tribal society.
The Government of India declared the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda as ‘Tribal Pride Day’ in the year 2021 in respect to his heritage and contribution to the tribal society. Tribal society, government institutions, and cultural organizations organize various programs on this day such as exhibitions of tribal art and culture, seminars, and tribute ceremonies dedicated to the life of Birsa Munda.
The life of Birsa Munda is the inspiration that tells that every community has the right to live with rights and self-respect. He made the tribal society aware of their rights and inspired them to organize and fight.
