Bodhi Day is celebrated on 8 December every year. Usually, it falls on the 8th day of the twelfth month in the lunisolar calendar. In Japan, it is celebrated as Rohatsu. Emperor Meiji shifted the day to its current date during the time of Japan’s westernization as well as adopting the Gregorian calendar. On this day, many tend to meditate and try to awaken spiritually.
It is celebrated because of this day Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment. Around 2,500 years ago, King Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment and became Buddha or say awakened one’. He rejected his luxurious lifestyle filled with comfort at the age of 29 and went on a journey to find the meaning of life.
He did meditation in Bodh Gaya, a town in northeastern India, under a Peepal tree (a species of Banyan fig). Now the tree is popularly known as the Bodhi Tree. He continued meditating under the tree till he achieved bodhi i.e enlightenment. At the age of 35, he learned the true meaning of life.
After that, he could see everything and everyone was connected. It led him to create Four Noble Truths: Nirodha (cessation), Dukkha (unsatisfactoriness), Magga (path), and Samudaya (arising).
Buddhists around the world observe the day by meditating and learning about dharma (‘universal truth or law’). A kind act is done on other beings, a delicious meal is cooked and tea is enjoyed under the tree.
Bodhi tree planting ceremonies are performed along with organizing tea ceremonies. Mult-coloured lights are displayed during the entire month in Japan, China, and other parts of the world.
