Each full moon date has its own significance in Hinduism. It is believed that there are different rules of fasting and worship on the full moon date falling in each month and following them fulfills the wishes. In this sequence, the full moon that falls in the month of Vaishakh is called Vaishakhi Purnima or Budh Purnima. This full moon date is special in itself because on this day Mahatma Budh, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born.
This year the festival of Budh Purnima is being celebrated on Monday, May 16, 2022. It marks the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This day is also called Buddha Jayanti, or Vesak.

Siddhartha Gautama later founded Buddhism and was called Mahatma Buddha. He renounced materialistic pleasures and extravagance at an early age.
He discovered the eternal truth after seeing human suffering. Years later after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
According to the scriptures, Vaishakh Purnima is considered to be the best among all. The full moon of every month is dedicated to Lord Hari Vishnu. Many people keep a fast on the day of Buddha Purnima. Those observing the fast should wake up early in the morning and take a vow of fasting after taking a bath.
