According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated in the month of Kartik of Purnima Tithi. As per Drik Panchan, it will be celebrated on 26 November 2023. Purnima Tithi will start at 15:53 PM on November 26 and will end on 27 November at 14:45 PM.
History:
There are many stories and myths related to the festival. On this day, many goddesses and gods came to earth to take a dip in the Ganga River. All the ghats of Varanasi are decorated and diya are lit to pay respect to every god who arrives on earth. Additionally, the win of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura is also cherished and celebrated.
Devotees love to decorate their homes with lights, rangoli and diyas. Ghats are decorated. Ganga aarti is performed, the main attraction of the festival. A ritual where 24 young girls and 24 priests perform the aarti with dedication and devotion.
