Durga Ashtami popularly known as Maha Ashtami is celebrated on the 8th day of Navratri. A nine-day Hindu festival where Maa Durga is worshipped. It is usually celebrated in the lunar month of Ashwin in the autumn season.
During Navratri, all nine incarnation of Maa Durga is worshipped and celebrated. The whole country celebrated the festival with enthusiasm and dedication. It is observed 2nd day of Durga Puja or say 8th Day of Navratri.
The 8th form of Maa Durga i.e Maa Mahagauri is worshipped. She is known for her purity, tranquillity and serenity. In India, the festival is known as Maha Ashyami, Ashtami and Durga Ashtami.
Durga Ashtami Significance
In Bengal, the festival holds great significance. It starts with Shashti, the incarnation of Goddess Shakti is worshipped. According to old tradition Goddess appeared in the form of Shashti to kill the demon Mahishasura as well as his associates Munda, Raktabija and Chanda.
As per Drik Panchang, the day starts by performing Shodashopachar Puja, a ritual where nine pots are placed at the worship spot denoting all nine shaktis of Goddess Durga. All these nine forms are worshipped on Maha Ashtami Puja.
Additionally, small girls i.e unmarried girls are worshipped as they are regarded as divine forms of Maa Durga. This is called Kanya Pujan. It is observed in many states of India.
Sandhi Puja is also performed in some temples where animal or vegetable sacrifice is done in order to give it to Goddess Durga.
It is performed during the last 24 minutes of Ashtami Tithi. As per Drik Panchang, it is mandatory to light 108 eastern lamps during the Sandhya Kaal.
