Eid Ul-Adha – The festival is known as the “Festival of Sacrifice “. Famously it is called Bakrid. The day is regarded as the most significant festival in the Muslim community. It is widely celebrated across the globe with full enthusiasm. The second most important festival for Muslims after Eid al-Fitr. This year in 2023, the festival will be observed on 29th June 2023 and in the evening of 30th June. It should be noted that the actual date of the festival is based on the sighting of the moon.
The reason behind the celebration is based on the story of Abraham, Ibrahim. His willingness to sacrifice his own son just to show his dedication towards God. As per tradition, Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son, seeing his obedience God intervened and gave a ram as a substitute. The festival denotes obedience, faith and complete submission to God.
The festivities began on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. The 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar and goes for the next 4 days. Basically, the Islamic calendar is 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. So, the dates for the festival vary each year.
Muslim communities around the country do prayers in mosques and open spaces. Also listening to sermons made by religious leaders. The day is all about charity, giving to the less fortunate and celebrating with family and friends. Additionally, the sacrifice is done of an animal to show dedication and faith in God, the ritual is called Qurbani. Later the meat is distributed among family, friends and poor people.
