Govardhan Puja holds special importance in Hinduism. The festival is celebrated every year on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This year Govardhan Puja will be performed on 2 November 2024. On this day, the special worship is performed of Lord Krishna, who saved the people of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indradev.
The Bhagwat Purana mentions that Lord Krishna asked the people of Braj to worship Govardhan mountain instead of sending Prasad to Indradev, who was considered the god of rain. Indradev got angered by this and started raining heavily over Vrindavan. In this scenario, he lifted Govardhan mountain on his little finger to save the people of Vrindavan from the rains. Seven days later, Indradev admitted his mistake and apologized to Shri Krishna and since then this festival of Govardhan Puja started being celebrated. It is also called Annakoot festival, in which Annakoot offering is prepared and offered to God.
This day, the shape of Govardhan mountain is created from cow dung and is worshiped. The picture of Govardhan Maharaj is made outside the house from cow dung and is worshiped along with the family. There is great importance given to the cow in this puja itself, which reflects respect for rural life and its surroundings. Flowers, Akshat, and lamps are decorated on the shape of Govardhan mountain.
The story of the shrinking of Govardhan mountain is also connected with Govardhan Puja. Once Pulastya Rishi reached near Govardhan mountain while on pilgrimage and felt great attraction to it and so wished to take it to Kashi. Govardhan put a condition that wherever the sage will place him, he will settle there permanently. When the sage reached Braj, Govardhan thought to stay there and became heavy. He kept him there during rest. After this, Govardhan declared that he would not leave the place because of his condition. Infuriated, the sage cursed that he will lessen every day by a little amount. According to belief, by the end of Kalyug, Govardhan mountain will disappear fully into the earth.
It is called Annakoot, with Govardhan Puja. On this day after worshiping Govardhan mountain, various kinds of grains, vegetables, and many varieties of dishes are prepared as an offering to Lord Krishna. This festival Annakoot is especially seen at the rural areas in northern India. Annakoot Prasad is prepared and spread by the whole society, which helps increase the feeling of collectivity and social cooperation.
Govardhan Puja has a deep meaning in Hindu culture and the religious beliefs of people. This festival not only exhibits faith in Lord Krishna but also depicts love for nature and animals.
