Karthigai Deepam 2022 History

While the scriptures may not explicitly explain the true history, there are some references to it in older literature. The ancient Tamil poetry book Ahananuru, which is a compilation of poems, contains references to this festival of lights. It is one of the best works of Sangam literature, covering events from 200 BC to 300 AD. Avaiyyar, a well-known Sangam-era woman, also makes reference to Karthigai Deepam in her poetry.

The Tamil solar calendar’s greatest important day is Karthigai Deepam, a celebration of lights. When Karthigai Nakshatram is in effect, it is commemorated on Karthigai Pournami (Full Moon Day in the period of Karthigai). This festival, which honors Lord Mahadev and his son Lord Kartikeya which is also called Murugan, Shanmugham, and Subramanian, is enthusiastically observed in households and shrines.
