Observance of Maha Shivaratri
Different geographical and cultural groups observe the auspicious occasion in different ways. The day is commemorated at the Annamalai Temple in Tamil Nadu. Devotees engage in Giri Pradakshina or Girivalam, a 14-kilometer barefoot journey encircling Shiva’s holy place at the top of the hill. The Mandi fair, which is hosted in the city of Mandi, attracts devotees from India. It is believed that 200 Hindu gods gather in Mandi on this day.
Unmarried women in West Bengal go to Tarakeswar, a sacred location, to pray for assistance in locating the ideal husband. Women worshippers bathe the Shivalinga in panchamrit and offer prayers for the wellbeing of their sons and spouses.

Early hours of the morning, worshippers wash in the Ganga and any other equivalent, beloved body of water. Purification rites, such as honoring Vishnu, Mahadev, and Suryadev, are customary. After taking a bath, believers bring containers of water to the temple and get there clothed in clean apparel.
The linga is decorated by devotees with flowers. Fruit, flowers, and burning incense are also offered. All of these Mahadev salutations are offered for the sake of humanity and to protect the nation from all harm.
