History of the day
Among the most significant religious celebrations of Jainism, religion is recognized as Mahavir Jayanti. Jainism places a strong emphasis on ensuring that there is no or very little harm done to living things. Mahavir was born in Kundalagrama, Bihar, on the thirteenth day of the Hindu calendar’s Chaitra month, or the thirteenth day of the waxing moon. He was the son of Queen Trishala as well as King Siddhartha at birth. However, the Swetambar Jains disagree over the exact year of his birth; they claim he was born in 599 BC, whereas the Digambar Jains assert that he was born in 615 BC.
Significance of the day
The final 1.2 decades of Lord Mahavir’s existence were devoted as an ascetic in exile, free from all materialistic luxuries. He advocated for non-violence, truth, honesty, aparigraha (non-attachment), non-stealing, and brahmacharya (chastity). Indrabhuti Gautama, Mahavir’s principal follower, put together all the teachings. He reached Nirvana (enlightenment) at the age of 72 after searching for spiritual and true liberation.
As part of the nationwide processions of Lord Mahavir held to commemorate Mahavir Jayanti, Jain temples are decked with flowers and banners. Moreover, contributions are offered to help prevent the slaughter of animals.
