According to the Hindu calendar every year, this date falls on the Trayodashi date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month.
The festival of Mahavir Jayanti is dedicated to the founder of Jainism. During his lifetime, he preached non-violence and spiritual freedom and taught man to respect and honor all living beings. He gave the message of Ahimsa Paramo Dharma to the entire humanity. Apart from this, Lord Mahavira also preached principles like non-violence, truth, non-possession, non-stealing and celibacy in Panch Mahavrat, which is the basic foundation of Jainism.
About two and a half thousand years ago, i.e. 599 years before Christ, Lord Mahavira was born from the womb of King Siddhartha and his wife Queen Trishala in Kshatriya Kundalpur of Vaishali Republic. In the present era, Kundalpur is located in Vaishali district of Bihar. His childhood name was Vardhaman, which means “one who grows”, along with this Mahavira is also known by the names of Veer, Ati Veer and Samhati. At the age of 30, he left the comforts of the royal palaces and went to the forest in search of truth. It is also believed that after 12 years of rigorous penance, Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment and he attained salvation in Pavapuri at the age of 72.
