Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated by Jains as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. This day is the birthday of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Mahavir Jayanti is especially the main festival of the followers of Jainism. Lord Mahavir is also known as Vardhamana and it was he who established the basic principles of Jainism. The festival of Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated on Thursday, 10 April in the year 2025. Mahavir was born on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha of the moon, during the Chaitra month of the year 599 BC. Therefore, under the Gregorian calendar, this festival falls in the month of March or April. Jayanti is mainly celebrated in Pavapuri in Bihar, Girnar and Palitana in Gujarat, Shri Mahavirji Temple in Rajasthan and Parasnath Temple in Kolkata.
Lord Mahavir is considered to be the founder of Jainism. He was born on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month in 599 BC in Kshatriyakund, Bihar. He was the 24th and last Tirthankara (a god who preaches religion). It is believed that Mahavira renounced worldly attachments and royal splendor at the young age of 30 years. And went to the forest in search of truth. It is believed that Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment after 12 years of rigorous penance.
At the age of 30, he renounced worldly deeds and moved towards meditation. He attained enlightenment by meditating continuously for 12 years under an Ashoka tree. Mahavira traveled all over India and taught to eliminate superstitions and many false beliefs. According to Lord Mahavira, always speak the truth and include truth in your life. Lord Mahavira has always given the message of non-violence. According to him, man should always follow the path of non-violence in life. His teachings inspire us to live a life of peace, love and morality. Lord Mahavira passed away at the age of 72 and left this world for heaven.
