Navratri is one of the most distinctive festivals in Hinduism, observed four times a year. This festival is of great significance for worship and is linked to many forms of Maa Durga. People worship Maa Durga during Navratri for nine days. Maa Durga was also believed to come on earth to bless her devotees this year during the Sharadiya Navratri, which started from 3 October 2024.

The Hindu calendar says the Navaratri commences from the date of Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. This year, Sharadiya Navratri will begin on 3rd October 2024, Thursday at 12:19 am and will be successful on 12th October 2024, Saturday. Maa Durga’s worship is the main objective of the festival. In this, nine different forms of Maa Durga are worshipped, and every day is dedicated to a special form.

During Navratri, all devotees worship with special meditation and rituals to express their devotion towards Maa Durga. Each day is decided for the worship of a different form of the mother by the devotees and has the offering of new flowers, fruits, and sweets in devotion. Red color is especially used during the occasions of worship, as this color is dear to Maa Durga and is considered a symbol of prosperity, good luck, power, and love.

The devotees chant mantras on the days of Navratri, which boosts peace of mind and concentration. It is also believed that serving needy people and donating brings virtue.

Ghatasthapana is performed on the first day of Navratri, which also falls within special worship. According to rules, certain rules need to be governed during Ghatasthapana. If those rules are not followed, then the worship is incomplete. At the time of Ghatasthapana, a Kalash is established as a representation of Mother Durga that attracts the mother’s grace.

A particular goddess is worshipped daily during Navratri. The following forms are worshiped for the respective days given here.

  • First Day (Shailaputri): Maa Shailaputri is worshiped, who is the goddess of mountains.
  • Second day (Brahmacharini): Maa Brahmacharini is worshiped which symbolizes sadhana and penance.
  • Third day (Chandraghanta): Maa Chandraghanta is worshiped, who is the goddess of war.
  • Fourth day (Kushmanda): Maa Kushmanda is worshiped, who is the goddess of happiness and prosperity.
  • Fifth day is called Skandamata. This goddess is believed to be the goddess of child happiness
Sixth day is called Katyayani. This goddess is worshipped for love and marriages
  • Seventh day is called Kalratri. This goddess is taken into worship for protection from all sorts of negativity.
Eighth day is called Mahagauri. The goddess is taken into worship for mental and physical health.
Ninth Day is known as Siddhidatri. Maa is the Goddess of perfection and accomplishments.

The festival of Navratri is not just a place for worship but an occasion when devotees try to purify their souls and bring positivity in their lives. In this festival of reverence and devotion towards Maa Durga, all the devotees work together for the well-being of each other. This festival teaches us that when we work with positivity and unity, then we achieve success definitely. These nine days of Navratri are not only an opportunity to receive the blessings of Maa Durga but also a means to bring happiness, prosperity, and well-being in our lives.
