Onam is a festival observed all across the Indian State of Kerala. The celebration is done with immense fervor and enthusiasm. This is a much-awaited celebration every year. In 2023, the celebration kickstarted on 20 August and it is going to wrap up on 31 August. The festival celebrations are carried on for 10 long days. This day is also popularly known as Thiruvonam or Thiru-Onam.
The celebration is done all over the state with much participation. This day commemorates the return of King Maveli/Mahabali.
Each festival day carries its significance. Various Onam days are Thiruvonam, Uthradom, Pooradam, Moolam, Thriketta, Anizham, Vishakam, Chodi, Chithira, and Atham. As per the Malayalam Calendar, this celebration is usually done in the month of Chingam. Thus every year the celebration days fall around August and September as per the Gregorian calendar.
Significance
Onam is celebrated primarily in Kerala. However, the spirit, charm, and beauty this celebration carries goes far beyond the state mesmerizing and captivating people all across regional boundaries of India and making this day worth celebrating for.
Malayalis celebrate this day with huge pomp and show. Onam is a highly cherished festival for them and all other Indians residing elsewhere. This celebration blends cultural expressions with religious respect.
The celebration which is carried out for ten long days, holds special rituals. During its celebration, people wake up during the wee hours, sweep and mop their floors, decorate their homes with flowers, make rangolis and Pookalam designs, and prepare Onam Sadhya, a dish for feast. People also decorate their houses with beautiful and creative rice flour patterns on their entrances and doors.
Onam celebration is a festive occasion that brings gifts exchanged between loved ones, wearing traditional jewelry, and buying new clothes. Women usually go for classy and elegant Kasavu six yards of elegance, and sarees, and men and boys prefer Pattu Pavada. Various other games played on this day include archery, Pulikali, and boat races.
