Surya Pongal (January 14, 2025)
Surya Pongal is the main day of the festival, dedicated to the Sun God, and is also known as ‘Makar Sankranti’.
Mattu Pongal (January 15, 2025)
The third day, Mattu Pongal, honors cattle.
Kaanum Pongal (January 16, 2025)
Kaanum Pongal, the final day, is a time for socializing and spending quality moments with family.
According to legend, Lord Krishna saved the Gokulvasis from Lord Indra’s fury. When Indra unleashed heavy rains and floods upon Gokul, Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain with his little finger to protect the village. Following this act, Indra recognized his error and blessed the Gokulvasis with abundance.
During Pongal, homes are cleaned, and ‘kolam’ designs are created. This rangoli, made from rice flour, represents auspiciousness and prosperity. After offering Pongal sweets to the Sun God, everyone shares the meal together. The festival also marks the harvest of new crops, allowing farmers to celebrate the results of their labor.
