Shavuot is a festival with many names, each representing different aspects of the festival. These are Hag Hakatzir (festival of the harvest), Hag Hashavut (festival of the weeks), and Hag Habikurim (festival of the first fruits). The holiday also books-ends the Counting of the Omar, a ritual counting down each of the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot. It is as a festival marking the “birthdays of the Torah” that it is mainly observed today. Traditionally, dairy dishes are served on this holiday to symbolize the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’ along with the sweetness of the Torah.
