Teachers’ Day holds a great position in Indian culture. Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on September 5 with much fanfare in India. This day is celebrated as the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the first Vice President and the second President of India.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher, scholar, and teacher, who had immense faith in education. When he assumed the office of President in 1962, and his students showed a desire to celebrate his birthday especially, he suggested that this day should be dedicated in honor of teachers. Thus, September 5 came to be celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Madras Presidency. He was a great teacher and taught at famous universities including the University of Calcutta and the University of Oxford. He lectured in America and Europe to foster cultural relations. Dr. Radhakrishnan worked a lot in the field of education. He was granted Bharat Ratna in 1954. He was also made an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
The Guru-Shishya tradition holds a special place in Indian culture. Teachers’ Day is not only a birth anniversary celebration of Dr. Radhakrishnan but also a day of respect for the hard work and dedication of teachers. On this day, students pay respect and show gratitude to their teachers. Also, teachers take this day for self-introspection so that they can create a healthy and inspiring environment for students.
It is celebrated in all the educational institutions of the country. The students pay respect to the teachers through speeches, songs, and cultural programs. In schools, it often happens that the senior students become teachers for a day and the junior classes are taught by them. Students give gifts, cards, and flowers to the teachers as a token of love and respect.
Whereas Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5th in India, World Teachers’ Day falls on October 5th. It is a day commemorated worldwide in honor of teachers by big organizations like UNESCO, UNICEF, and ILO.
