Thanksgiving 2024 will fall on Thursday, November 28 this year. In fact, every year this festival falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Its earliest date can be November 22, while the latest date is November 28. It has become so since the early times of the 1620s when English Pilgrims and Puritans introduced their traditional celebrations to America. The first Thanksgiving had been held in 1621 when the Pilgrims gave thanks for a good harvest in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The Wampanoag and the last surviving members of the Patuxet community, who helped the Pilgrims to survive, also celebrated with the feast. But within the early years, Thanksgiving was not held on any single date, it was observed differently at various times and places.
It became a celebrated holiday on the last Thursday of November across most of the United States by the 19th century. As a matter of official declaration, it was so declared by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 as a time to celebrate American military success and individual gratitude.
However, in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt shifted it from the last Thursday to the fourth Thursday. It was considered to start Christmas shopping a week in advance and therefore improve the economy. It was finally legally established in 1942.
Thanksgivings, therefore must fall on Thursdays during Puritan times. The Puritans would never celebrate on Fridays because it is a Catholic fasting day. They already reserved Saturday for prep for the Sabbath and Sunday for religious exercise. Thursday is the best remaining day for them to have Thanksgiving.
Today, that Thursday tradition gives people a rare four-day weekend, making Friday very suitable for rest and recreation.
Today it is no more a religious and historical practice but a secular. Day symbolizes spending time with family and friends, showing gratitude and doing good for others. People on this day seem to like the food items such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and so many other dishes.
Volunteering is also an imperative tradition for the day. Many communities organize food distribution and free dinners for the needy. It is a symbol of unity, empathy, and gratitude.
