As the year closes, the wait for Thanksgiving Day further increases. It is a day not just to consume food and spend with family but also a special occasion on which one can thank all those people who contribute to one’s lives. So, let’s know when is Thanksgiving 2024 and what is the historical and cultural significance of this day.
Thanksgiving Day in 2024 will fall on Thursday, November 28. It is the fourth Thursday of November every year. Accordingly, the date changes every year either to come around November 22 or to be reached by November 28 but late in November.
The history of Thanksgiving is related to the 1620s since pilgrims and puritans from England transplanted food traditions to the American shores. The history dates back to 1621 when the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts with a rich harvest. It so happened that at that point in time, the Pilgrims shared food with the Wampanoag tribe who assisted them.
By the end of the 19th century, Thanksgiving becomes a well-established tradition to celebrate on the last Thursday of November, but was declared a legal holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. More than fifty years later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it forward to the fourth Thursday of November in 1939 in a successful attempt to get an early start on the Christmas shopping season to try to boost the economy. The new date stuck and has been permanently placed on the fourth Thursday since 1942.
It is amazing how many are wondering why Thanksgiving cannot be held on a Friday since everyone needs a long weekend. Such a reason goes to the Puritan traditions. They treated Fridays as days of fasting; that is why they could not celebrate on that day. On Saturdays, they prepared for Sunday when they would be in rest. Therefore, Sunday became the rest day, and the day of celebration had to occur before Sunday; thus the fall on Thursdays.
Today, Thanksgiving Day is not only a historical day but inspires gratitude and solidarity among each other. On this day, families and friends gather and have a feast. A feast which is devoted to dishes like roasted turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and cranberry sauce. It is also the day of social work on which food is donated to the poor and volunteering works are done by them.
Celebrate Thanksgiving 2024 with heartfelt wishes, quotes, images, messages, and greetings to share with loved ones.
