The harvest time is very special in India especially since 70% of the population of the country is dependent in some way or other with agriculture. The occasion is celebrated in different parts of the country and in the Telangana, AP and Karnataka region as Ugadi. The word Ugadi means the beginning of a new era or Yuga and in general terms it means the New Year. The New Year is the first day of the month of Chaitra. The day is significant because it also marks the beginning of the Chaitra Navaratri which will culminate with Ram Navami of the Birth of Lord Rama.

Ugadi signifies the beginning of the Hindu New Year and is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Goa in India. The genesis of the word Ugadi can be traced to the Sanskrit word Yugadi where Yuga means an era and adi means the start. The day can fall any day between the months of March or April. The festival is celebrated by different names in different parts of the country. It is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and Yugadi in Karnataka.

The preparations for Ugadi start one week before the actual festival. The house is cleaned and whitewashed. The day is also considered to be auspicious for the start of new businesses and many people open shops and start business on this day hoping to prosper in the coming year. New business ventures and inauguration of shops and malls are common on this day as Ugadi is considered a prosperous day to start something new.

The day begins with an early oil bath followed by pooja of the Kul Devta. The womenfolk create beautiful floral patterns on the courtyard and it is known as Muggulu or Rangoli. The doors are adorned with mango leaves also known as Torana and they are considered very auspicious. Special dishes such as pachadi is prepared which is a delicacy made from curd and bottle gourd, neem flowers, chili powder, tamarind, mango, jaggery, and salt.

The pachadi as the name suggests is a blend of six flavors and symbolizes all the aspects of life. People also carry out poojas as per Kannada and Telugu customs and pray that the coming year will be full of prosperity and happiness.
