Women’s Day– Every year, the month of March is celebrated as Women’s history month. An annual month-long celebration that aims to recognize all the contributions women have made in history as well as contemporary society. Women’s Day is officially celebrated on March 8th. This includes highlighting the political, cultural as well as socio-economic achievements of women in different fields. It also aims to encourage equal pay that is free from any stereotypes and discrimination. This will help in making society equal where every value is celebrated.
International Women’s Day 2023 Theme:
Every year, the day is celebrated with a new theme to highlight its significance effectively. This year i.e 2023 theme is Embrace Equity or #EmbraceEquity. On the official website, it is stated- “Equity isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have. A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society’s DNA. And it’s critical to understand the difference between Equity and Equality. The main aim of this year’s IWD is to let people talk about- ‘Why equal opportunities aren’t enough’.” Here Equality means any group or individual that has been given the same resources or chances. The IWD website states, “Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.”
International Women’s Day 2023: History
International Women’s Day was first recognized due to the activities that happened during the labor movement across America and Europe, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). UNESCO says, “The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28 1909, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York where women protested against harsh working conditions. In 1917, a woman started to protest against the situation with the slogan ‘Bread and Peace’. It fell on 8th March.
