Harmanpreet Kaur on her unbeaten 95: ‘I didn’t chant any special mantra to achieve this’, reveals WPL 2024 player

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s sensational 95 not off 48 balls in Mumbai Indians’ win over Gujarat Giants has propelled her team into the 2024 WPL playoffs. Harmanpreet emphasized the importance of calculations and teamwork in achieving this remarkable victory, where Mumbai chased down 191 runs with a ball to spare.

In the match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Harmanpreet’s blistering innings helped Mumbai score 91 runs in the last six overs, setting a new record for the highest successful chase in WPL history. She now holds the record for the highest score by an Indian batter in the tournament, with 77 runs coming off just 29 balls in the latter part of her innings.

Speaking about her approach to the game, Harmanpreet said, “There’s no secret, it’s all about calculations. At the international level, everyone knows how to calculate a run chase.” She emphasized the importance of clear communication and backing oneself during pressure situations, like the one they faced while chasing a formidable total against the Giants.

The all-rounder Sajana Sajeevan’s crucial wicket of Gujarat Giants’ captain Beth Mooney shifted the momentum in Mumbai Indians’ favor. Harmanpreet acknowledged the team’s good job in stopping the opposition’s scoring rate in the final overs, which ultimately led to Gujarat Giants facing a batting collapse and ending up with 191 runs.

Former India cricketer and now broadcaster Reema Malhotra praised Harmanpreet’s performance, highlighting its significance for women’s cricket in the WPL. “This isn’t just a win for the Mumbai Indians, it’s a win for women’s cricket. Every match we are seeing players increase the bar of performance,” she remarked, underlining the positive impact of the WPL on the women’s game.

The Mumbai Indians’ victory over Gujarat Giants in the WPL match showcased the remarkable skills and determination of Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, as she led her team to a historic win with a stunning display of batting prowess and strategic acumen.
