The highest court of the land, the Supreme Court also expressed its anguish and warned the state to give a full report and the action taken against the perpetrators of the injustice. The Kuki tribe also took out a march in Churachandpur which was composed of thousands of participants who braved the incessant downpours to express their indignation.
The genesis of the violence in Manipur can be traced to a march that was started by the Kukki tribals on May 3 after the Meitei community was included in the Scheduled Tribe category. The Meitei community also started a protest and clashes erupted between the two communities. As per the Hindu, the death toll has reached 115 with more than 40, 000 people migrating to neighboring states. The Meitei and Kukki-dominated villages have turned into no-go zones. Bunkers have been erected by both the communities and they are manned by youths of both the communities, armed with sophisticated weapons looted from the state and central armories.
It is time that both the Central and State government to take measures to re-establish their writ on the state. A combined and all-party delegation must act as an impartial ombudsman and try to defuse the situation by having talks with both the warring parties. Finally, there should be condemnation of the incident and the nation must unite to bring justice to the victims and punish the guilty. The Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has even called for capital punishment for the perpetrators of the injustice.

The Supreme Court will listen to the central government’s plea to transfer the trial of the Manipur sexual assault case on a later date after Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was unavailable due to poor health. Justice JP Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra-led bench will hear a fresh plea connected to the case, which is linked to FIR number (110)(6)(2023) reported at Nongpok Sekmai Police station of B Phainom village of Senapati District, Manipur.
The Supreme Court had taken suo moto cognizance of the matter on July 20 and asked the state government and center to take immediate action.
The central government has moved the case to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and requested the trial be performed outside the state. They also requested the court to guarantee the completion of the whole issue, including the gang rape case, within six months.
