You must be aware that Vedic astrology studies the planets and how their positions affect human events. Most Americans are familiar with and utilise Western astrology to interpret their horoscopes. While this is completely acceptable, there is another school known as Vedic astrology that takes a different approach.

Besides being called Eastern astrology, Hindu astrology, or Indian astrology, it is also known as Jyotisha or Jyotishya, which means “heavenly body” in Sanskrit. This has its roots in Hindu culture.

When it comes to dividing up the 12 zodiac constellations within a year, the most significant distinction between Western astrology and Vedic astrology is that they employ two separate ways to do it.

Traditionally, Western astrology has been based on a tropical (or fixed) zodiac system that defines the year, and consequently, the dates associated with each of the 12 zodiac signs, as commencing on March 21 with the sign of Aries.

For its part, Vedic astrology is based on a sidereal (or movable) zodiac system. In Vedic astrology, Aries is likewise the first sign of the zodiac, but due to these correction calculations, it begins on April 14  instead of March 21.

One system uses corrective mathematical measures while the other does not, resulting in a one-degree discrepancy between the tropical and sidereal systems every 72 years, with a present difference of around 24 degrees between the two systems.

Both astrological traditions employ mathematics in their computations, but many believe Vedic astrology employs it more extensively.

Instead of using the tropical year, Ved Shastra makes use of the Sidereal year, which is the time it takes for the earth to rotate around the Sun with respect to the fixed star Chitra. This duration is approximately 20 minutes longer than the tropical year, according to certain estimates.

As a result of this phenomenon, the sign of Aries in Western Astrology continues to drift away from the sign of Aries in Vedic Astrology at a pace of one degree every 72 years, resulting in the sign of Aries being farther distant from the sign of Aries.
