“I Rebuke You in the Name of Jesus” Meaning Behind Sonya Massey’s Final Words Which Provoked Police Officer To Shoot Her

“I Rebuke You in the Name of Jesus” – These were the final words of Ms. Sonya Massey, the woman who was killed by a responding police officer.

Massey’s father said that his daughter had a premonition of being killed by the police.

A bodycam video released by Illinois Police revealed the last chilling moments and the conversation between Ms. Massey and the responding police officer before she was gunned down at almost point-blank range.

Ms. Massey had called the police after she suspected that an intruder had entered her house.

Two Sangamon County sheriff’s deputies arrived at Ms. Massey’s house after she rang 911 for help.

In the bodycam video, Ms. Massey can be seen conversing with one of the officers.

She then proceeds to the kitchen to turn off a pot of boiling water.

Immediately, one of the officers, Sean Grayson, steps back and responds with, “Away from your hot steaming water.” Ms. Massey responds with, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

Unable to comprehend, the officer retorts, “Huh,” to which Massey again repeats, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” A few seconds later, she was shot dead in her home.

The release of the video sent shockwaves across the US and left people wondering what the phrase meant and what irked the police officer to take this extreme step.

What does “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” mean?

The phrase “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” is a common phrase used among people professing Christian faith and is often resorted to express extreme disapproval of any act.

Christians also use the phrase to rebuke Satan or what they perceive as satanic practices.

However, the phrase is also used to strongly reject or oppose any act without any religious intent.

Many netizens feel that in Massey’s case, her final words were intentional and feel Massey saying the phrase to Grayson and his partner was meant in the religious sense.

The bodycam video also reveals after Grayson’s partner stepped away from her, the police officer sees Massey moving toward a pot of boiling water.

Grayson immediately responds, “You better f–king not, or I swear to God I’ll f–king shoot you in the f–king face.”

Massey immediately said, “I’m sorry.”

The police officer fires three shots at Massey, and one of the bullets pierces her cheek and exits from the back of her neck.

Sean Grayson is now facing charges of manslaughter and has since been dismissed from the police force.
