Imtiaz Ali remembers encounter with Chamkila’s friend who cursed the singer

Mumbai, April 12 (IANS) Auteur Imtiaz Ali, who is receiving positive responses for his streaming film, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila,’ shared insights about the movie based on the lives of Punjabi artist Amar Singh Chamkila and wife Amarjot Kaur, whose songs were hits in the 1980s.

Imtiaz revealed meeting Chamkila’s close friend Tikki, who played the dholak and shared fascinating details about the late artist’s life. He mentioned convincing Diljit Dosanjh to play Chamkila and the challenges Parineeti Chopra faced in recreating Amarjot’s music.

During an interview with IMDb, Imtiaz discussed the extensive research he conducted, meeting people who knew Chamkila and Amarjot, including Tikki who had a significant influence on Chamkila. The director also explored locations where Chamkila lived, enhancing his understanding of the artist’s life and impact on the masses.

Imtiaz expressed his interest in artists in cinema, stating, “I feel drawn to people who don’t conform and lead dramatic lives suitable for the big screen.” The director’s exploration of Chamkila’s life and interactions shed light on the artist’s unique ability to entertain and connect with audiences, making his story a compelling choice for cinematic adaptation.
