India calls for prioritizing development of Global South at WTO

India Advocates for Global South’s Interests at WTO

Abu Dhabi, Feb 28 (IANS) – In a Working Session on Development, India emphasized the importance of prioritizing the development and interests of the Global South in the World Trade Organization (WTO) agenda. India highlighted the lack of action on promises made to developing countries, leading to increased vulnerabilities, especially for Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

India pointed out that the multilateral trading system is currently facing various challenges, both internally and externally. Developing countries, including LDCs, are not only addressing global crises like debt and balance of payment issues but also defending their interests within the WTO.

Emphasizing that development is the primary goal for developing countries and LDCs within the WTO, India called for prioritizing and delivering solutions to the challenges faced by these nations. The country reiterated the significance of Special and Differential Treatment principles as integral objectives of the Multilateral Trading System.

India criticized developed countries for attacking these principles, highlighting the irony of developed nations benefiting from policy tools while denying the same opportunities to developing countries. The country stressed the need for flexibilities in existing rules to support infant and young industries in developing nations.

In discussions on the draft Abu Dhabi ministerial declaration, India insisted on giving prominence to issues relevant to developing countries and completing past mandates before considering new ones. The country’s strong advocacy for the Global South’s interests underscores the importance of addressing the needs of all WTO members for a fair and inclusive trading system.
