India calls in US ambassador day after ‘unwarranted’ comments on Delhi CM’s arrest
India on Wednesday summoned the US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and took strong objection to his remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, asking for “a fair, transparent, and timely legal process” for the jailed leader. The meeting lasted 45 minutes and came after a US State Department spokesperson’s comments on the issue.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “We take strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India.” The MEA emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty and internal affairs of other countries, especially among fellow democracies.
India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary committed to objective and timely outcomes. The MEA stated that any casting of aspersions on this process is unwarranted. Earlier, India also lodged a protest with the German Embassy over comments on the Aam Aadmi Party leader, labeling it as “blatant interference” in internal matters.
The US State Department’s comments have prompted diplomatic tensions between India and the United States. India’s stance on interference in its internal affairs remains firm, emphasizing the need for respect for sovereignty and independent legal processes. The issue highlights the complexities of diplomatic relations between nations and the importance of upholding diplomatic norms and protocols.
