India is now better equipped than ever to handle future pandemics, say experts

India is well-prepared to face any future pandemic, as per experts on the fourth anniversary of Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic, declared global by WHO on March 11, 2020, claimed over 7 million lives globally, including half a million in India, but risk has decreased significantly.

WHO declared pandemic over in May 2023, but SARS-CoV-2 virus mutations continue to pose a threat. Global health experts highlight the importance of pandemic preparedness to ensure equal access to tests and vaccines for all countries, especially after rich nations hoarded vaccines, leaving poorer nations at a disadvantage.

India has significantly improved its readiness since the start of Covid, says experts. The country has ramped up health infrastructure, communication systems, and other preparations to face similar outbreaks in the future. The government is reportedly working on a comprehensive pandemic preparedness programme covering surveillance, risk assessment, and resource mobilization.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, praises India’s assertive actions and systematic vaccination rollout that reduced deaths. Dr. Ishwar Gilada, an infectious disease expert, points out that India lacked pandemic preparedness but is now moving in the right direction, aided by the G20 presidency.

India’s rapid vaccine research and distribution, along with global solidarity initiatives like Vaccine-Maitri, have positioned the country as a key player in global health. The country has surpassed 2 billion vaccine doses and improved resources for future health emergencies. Experts emphasize the importance of preparedness for Long Covid and potential future virus mutations.
