India reversing missed opportunities of last 75 years, China chip era slowing down: Minister

In a recent address at the ‘Mumbai Tech Week,’ Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, highlighted India’s growing momentum in the semiconductor industry and its evolving global position in comparison to China. Chandrasekhar emphasized that India is reversing the missed opportunities of the last 75 years and positioning itself as a trusted partner in the future of tech, while China’s momentum in semiconductors is slowing down.

Chandrasekhar noted a significant shift in momentum, stating, “There is a trend today that, in terms of China, the momentum they had over the last decade in the areas of emerging and high tech, is slowing down and becoming blunter because of all the export control regimes being put against them.”

He also expressed confidence in India’s progress in the semiconductor industry, highlighting the establishment of two full-blown semiconductor fabrication plants and $10 billion fab investments coming into the country after decades. The minister emphasized that India is partnering with the best technology partners for the future of semiconductors and is focusing on building a robust design innovation ecosystem for next-generation chips and devices.

Furthermore, Chandrasekhar announced the upcoming construction of Assam’s first-ever semiconductor packaging plant worth nearly Rs 25,000 crore, a joint venture between the state government and Tata Group. Additionally, he mentioned the commencement of construction on an Rs 22,500 crore facility in Sanand, Gujarat by US-based Micron Technology, which will contribute to India’s semiconductor journey.

The Minister also revealed plans to launch the India Semiconductor Research Centre, a state-of-the-art research center where leading semiconductor makers from around the world will conduct research in India. These developments signify India’s commitment to establishing itself as a key player in the global semiconductor industry and seizing the opportunities in the tech sector.

India’s progress in the semiconductor industry reflects its efforts to capitalize on emerging technologies and strengthen its position as a trusted partner in the future of tech. With strategic investments, partnerships, and research initiatives, India is paving the way for significant advancements in semiconductor technology, positioning itself as a formidable player in the global market.
