Indian city offers week of amnesty, no traffic fines!
The Gujarat Traffic Police has announced a significant move by exempting citizens from paying fines for traffic violations until October 27, starting from October 21. This decision was communicated by the state’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who emphasized the importance of following traffic rules despite the temporary exemption.
While addressing the public, Sanghavi clarified that the exemption does not mean disregarding traffic regulations but offers a lenient approach to those who inadvertently commit offenses. The usual fines imposed in Gujarat for violations such as riding without a helmet, driving without a seatbelt, driving without a license, and other infractions have been waived for the designated period.
In a related development, Karnataka has implemented a strict rule requiring rear-seat passengers in four-wheelers to wear seat belts to avoid penalties. The Karnataka Police directive mandates a fine of ₹1,000 for non-compliance with the rule, applicable to all vehicles categorized as M1, including SUVs, MUVs, hatchbacks, and sedans. This enforcement aligns with a recent directive from the Central Government advocating for the compulsory use of rear seat belts in cars.
Industry experts view these initiatives as essential steps towards promoting road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. While the temporary exemption in Gujarat may offer relief to citizens, it underscores the importance of responsible driving behavior. The strict enforcement of the rear seat belt rule in Karnataka aims to enhance passenger safety and reduce the risk of injuries in case of accidents.
Both measures reflect a proactive approach by state authorities to address road safety concerns and enhance compliance with traffic laws. The impact of these initiatives on road behavior and safety awareness among citizens remains to be seen, with potential long-term implications for the overall traffic management system.
As the enforcement period continues, citizens are urged to adhere to traffic rules and prioritize safety while driving or traveling in vehicles. By promoting a culture of responsible road behavior, authorities aim to create a safer environment for all road users and reduce the frequency of accidents and violations.
