Indian Coast Guard Day is observed annually on 1 February, honoring the dedicated personnel who work relentlessly to safeguard our maritime borders. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a versatile organization that conducts a range of maritime operations throughout the year. Despite its relatively small size, the ICG is proficient in both surface and air operations. The organization is led by the Director General Indian Coast Guard (DGICG), who oversees operations from the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) located in New Delhi.

The Indian Coast Guard was founded on 1 February 1977, during a period when maritime smuggling posed a significant threat to the Indian economy. Initially, the Indian Navy was tasked with combating smuggling, but it soon became clear that a specialized maritime force was necessary. This led to the formation of the Nagchaudhuri Committee, which included representatives from both the Indian Navy and the Air Force. The committee recommended establishing a dedicated force to oversee maritime activities.

Consequently, on 18 August 1978, the Indian Coast Guard was officially established and recognized by Parliament under the “Coast Guard Act, 1978.”

Operating under the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Coast Guard is headquartered in New Delhi. It currently comprises 5 air stations, 10 air enclaves, and 42 coastal stations. India’s maritime border stretches 7516.60 km, encompassing 9 coastal states—Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal—as well as two union territories, Daman and Diu and Puducherry.

Indian Coast Guard Day is significant not just for honoring the courage of this force but also for emphasizing its vital role in coastal security, marine environmental protection, and disaster management. This day serves as a reminder of how this force plays a crucial part in both security and humanitarian efforts.
