History

Navy Day is celebrated as a celebration of the victory of the Indian Navy in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. On December 3, Pakistani forces attacked our airspace and border area. This attack sparked the 1971 war. ‘Operation Trident’ was launched to give a befitting reply to Pakistan. The operation was launched targeting the Karachi Headquarters of the Pakistan Navy. An attack group consisting of a missile boat and two warships attacked a group of ships off the coast of Karachi. For the first time in the war, the ship was attacked with anti-ship missiles. Many Pakistani ships were destroyed in this attack. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s oil tankers were also destroyed. On 4 December 1971, the Indian Navy destroyed the Karachi Naval Base in Pakistan as part of Operation Trishul. In view of the success of this operation, Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4 December in India.

Significance

The Indian Navy plays an important role in the security of the country’s maritime borders. The Indian Navy also plays an important role in strengthening India’s international relations. Towards this end, the Indian Navy arranges port visits to various countries, promotes patriotic missions, and extends a helping hand in case of any calamity in the country. The Indian Navy is considered the strongest force in South Asia. It has about 67,000 personnel and about 295 naval weapons.

The Indian Naval Command at Visakhapatnam plans activities and celebrations during the Navy Day celebrations. It begins with the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the War Memorial. Then the power and prowess of submarines, ships, aeroplanes etc. are shown.
