Indo-Pacific trade on the agenda as EAM Jaishankar arrives in Seoul

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar embarked on a three-day Asian tour, beginning in South Korea to co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting. Discussions on Indo-Pacific, trade, and economic cooperation were key highlights, setting the agenda for future cooperation with South Korea and Japan.

During his visit, Jaishankar held talks with Director of National Security, Chang Ho-jin, focusing on shared convergences in the Indo-Pacific and other regional issues. He also met with South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to strengthen India-Korea ties ahead of the Joint Commission Meeting.

The Joint Commission Meeting aims to review bilateral cooperation comprehensively and explore avenues for further collaboration. It will also provide an opportunity for both countries to discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest, as per the Ministry of External Affairs.

In efforts to enhance bilateral ties, Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Ahn Dukgeun and various think tanks. Highlighting the importance of trade and economic cooperation, the minister emphasized its significance in fostering the India-Korea relationship.

The strategic partnership between India and South Korea has expanded to various sectors including trade, investments, defence, education, and culture. South Korean Ambassador Chang Jae-bok praised the deepening economic relations between the two countries, with President Yoon Suk Yeol expected to visit India after the upcoming elections in April.

Overall, Jaishankar’s visit to South Korea aims to strengthen bilateral ties, enhance cooperation in key areas, and pave the way for future collaborations between India and South Korea.
