Industry Embraces Centre’s Directive Against Surrogate Advertisements

Industry players have welcomed the government’s advisory against direct and surrogate advertisements promoting offshore betting and gambling platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting urged influencers to refrain from such promotions.

Anuraag Saxena, CEO of E-Gaming Federation, praised the move, stating, “This is a significant move to protect the players and industry at large from endorsements and ads that promote illicit gambling and betting platforms.”

The E-Gaming Federation has been advocating for regulations to curb illegal gambling operators. Saxena expressed their commitment to supporting the government in creating a framework for a regulated gaming sector.

The ministry highlighted the financial and socio-economic impact of online betting on consumers, especially the youth. Non-compliance with the advisory may result in legal proceedings under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

Additionally, social media intermediaries have been advised to educate their users about refraining from promoting such content. The government aims to promote responsible gaming practices and discourage advertisements for offshore betting platforms.

Overall, the industry views the advisory as a positive step towards curbing illicit gambling advertisements and protecting consumers from the potential harms associated with online betting platforms.
