International Anti-Corruption Day is observed every year on 9 December to spread awareness of Corruption and of the role of the Convention in tackling it. As corruption is increasing day by day in the world, people observe this day as an initiative to eliminate corruption from society.

The theme of International Anti-Corruption Day 2021 is “Your right, your role: Say no to Corruption.”

History

On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has since been designated as the secretariat for the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (Resolution 58/4). The United Nations General Assembly then designated 9 December as Anti-Corruption Day, and the convention entered into force in December 2005. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the global community as a whole (UNODC) are key leaders in creating awareness.

International Anti-Corruption Day Significance and Importance

The importance of World Anti-Corruption Day is to intensify the global fight against corruption and explain how and why it should be avoided. The day has great importance for anti-corruption groups, who raise awareness about corruption and how to fight and prevent corruption in their workplace.

To save the foundation of democratic institutions, there is a need to prevent the deep roots of corruption as corruption distorts the electoral processes by bending the rule of law. Corruption also affects the economic development of the country in many ways.

According to United Nations statistics, every year 11 trillion are paid out as bribes, while 62.6 trillion are stolen through corruption. According to the United Nations Development Programme, corruption in developing countries has caused about 10 times the loss of money.

We all have to stand together against corruption and oppose it together.
