International Day of Tolerance 2024 Theme, Quotes, Images, Messages, Posters, Banners, Slogans, and Capt

International Day of Tolerance is observed every year on November 16 with the aim of spreading awareness in respect of tolerance, diversity, and respect. Tolerance does not mean one tolerates others but also means understanding, accepting, and valuing diversities. In this regard, after the adoption of the ‘Declaration of Principles of Tolerance’ by UNESCO, the United Nations (UN) chose November 16 to be celebrated as International Day for Tolerance in 1995.

In 1993, UNESCO proposed celebrating the “Year of Tolerance”, followed by the “Declaration of Principles of Tolerance” in 1995, which gave the message of respect for cultural diversity, protection of human rights and peace. The following year, in 1996, the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate November 16 as International Day of Tolerance.

This declaration made it clear that tolerance does not mean accepting others, but it is an active resolution which accepts diversity with respect and understanding. It becomes an element for peace, equality, and justice in the community. Here it underlines that tolerance should be promoted through education, dialogue, and measures under the law.

Increase tolerance among people and communities, reduce intolerance, prejudice, discrimination, and injustice. As there can be no sustainable peace in society without tolerance, so at this moment, this day raises people’s awareness to the importance of mutual understanding and coexistence.

UNESCO went forward and established UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize that would be presented to outstanding works in the field of tolerance and non-violence. This is a biennially honorary award; that is, it is awarded every two years on Tolerance Day, 16th November, to people or organizations with worthwhile efforts toward promoting tolerance and non-violence.

Tolerance is of prime importance in today’s society. A healthy environment in terms of diversity can only be created with the tolerant society. Tolerance is not only the means to ensure peace and harmony in society but also help support the rights and freedom of every human being. On this day, we get inspired to build such a society where everyone gets equal opportunities and respect without any kind of discrimination.

The day has a special theme assigned to it every year to emphasize the importance of tolerance in society.
