International Mother Language Day is observed annually on 21 February to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity. UNESCO declared this day in 1999 to honour the language movement in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) that took place in 1952.

During this movement, many students lost their lives fighting for the right to speak their mother tongue, Bengali. Since then, this day has been recognized globally to highlight the importance of linguistic rights, multilingualism, and the preservation of culture.

International Mother Language Day 2025 Theme

The theme for International Mother Language Day in 2025 is “Silver Jubilee of International Mother Language Day.”

This marks the 25th anniversary of the observance, focusing on maintaining linguistic diversity, promoting multilingual education, and safeguarding endangered languages. It also serves as a reminder of the crucial role that mother tongues play in education, social inclusion, and the formation of identity.

This day commemorates the sacrifices made during the 1952 language movement in Bangladesh. Following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, the country was split into two regions—East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan.

In 1948, the government of Pakistan declared Urdu as the national language, despite the fact that the majority of East Pakistan’s population spoke Bengali. This decision sparked widespread protests in the region.

On 23 February 1948, Dhirendranath Dutta made a plea in the Pakistani Constituent Assembly to recognize Bengali as a national language. In response to this demand, the government prohibited public meetings and demonstrations.

On 21 February 1952, students from Dhaka University, along with the general public, organized a large protest, which led to police opening fire. Many students lost their lives in this tragic event, marking the first instance in history where individuals were martyred for their mother tongue. This day was later declared a national holiday in Bangladesh.

On 9 January 1998, two Bangladeshi citizens residing in Canada, Rafiqul Islam and Abdus Salam, sent a letter to the United Nations, urging the recognition of this day as International Mother Language Day.

Their initiative received support from the Bangladesh government and was officially presented to UNESCO. On 17 November 1999, the proposal was unanimously approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly also acknowledged it, and 2008 was designated as the International Mother Language Year.

International Mother Language Day 2025 serves as a significant occasion to emphasize the value of linguistic and cultural diversity. This day serves as a reminder of our linguistic heritage and ensures that future generations stay connected to their mother tongue and cultural roots.

The mother tongue is not just a means of communication; it is also a vital part of our identity, culture, and traditions. Through this observance, we can promote awareness of our linguistic rights and foster an inclusive, multilingual society.
