Every year on 27 June, International MSME Day is celebrated. History
At a World Conference in 2016, by ICSB, or the International Council for Small Business realized how important MSME is for the economy for the first time. The need for recognition for the Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises was understood and accepted. On 6 April 2017, the 74th Plenary of the United Nations General Assembly was held where the recognition of International MSME Day was decided to be observed. MSMEs’ contribution to achieving various sustainable development goals was also realized. Later United Nations decided 27 June as the day to commemorate International MSME Day, every year.
Significance
The main motive behind celebrating International MSME Day is to make people aware of the important aspect of the Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises sector. This day is observed to offer knowledge to individuals about MSMEs. Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises create jobs for around two-thirds or 70% of the population. It lowers the unemployment rate.
In the employment-generating sector, MSMEs are ranked 2nd. Thousands and lacs are families are dependent on the MSME sector for their livelihood. International MSME Day will mark its 6th anniversary of celebration on 27 June 2023. Setting up of MSME boosts the economy and its condition. It imparts job opportunities to the unemployed section of the society. Most importantly they contribute a major portion to the GDP of any country.
