Iran’s Top General Killed in Suspected Israeli Airstrike in Syria

Tel Aviv, April 2 (IANS) – Brigadier General Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top Iranian General, was killed in an airstrike allegedly by Israel in the Syrian capital of Damascus. The officer, along with a Lieutenant and five other officers, was reportedly targeted in the attack.

Brigadier General Zahedi, a top general of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was said to be the highest ranking Iranian officer killed since the conflict between Israel and Hamas last year. He held a significant position in communication with Hezbollah.

According to sources, Zahedi was responsible for smuggling arms into Lebanon for Hezbollah. The airstrike, which took place near the Iranian consulate in Syria, targeted a building believed to be the regional headquarters of the IRGC.

Iran Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that Tehran holds Israel responsible for the consequences of the attack. The Iranian embassy in Syria condemned the airstrike as a violation of international laws and diplomatic norms.

Details about the incident are still emerging, and the impact of Zahedi’s death on Iran and its Quds Forces, which support Hezbollah, remains to be seen. The loss of such a high-ranking officer is likely to have significant implications in the region.
