There is finally some good news for Taxpayers who are filing their own returns this year. The tax season has started this Monday and with the unveiling of the IRS’s new, free Direct File service will allow taxpayers to know their tax refund without much trouble.
Here are some statistics for the 2023 tax season and the IRS has processed 163,515,000 returns. There has been a slight increase in average refund which amounts to $3,170 and it is a slight increase from the previous season’s average of $3,145.
It is trying times for the average taxpayer with inflations and surging prices blowing a hole in the pocket of an average American citizen. Prices of staple produce like eggs to other basics like gas are at an all time high, most average Americans are hoping for an even larger refund this year. Therefore you will be inclined to gauge the status of your refund and when it may arrive.
Here is some good news because you can do this exercise with ease with the IRS service “Where’s my refund?” tool which enables tax filers to check on and track the status of their refund

“Where’s my refund?” is a tool perfected by the IRS for filers to track the status of their tax refund. Taxpayers can log in online or via the IRS2Go mobile app and check back daily to see when they can expect their funds.
Once the taxpayer logs into the tool his information will be automatically updated once daily and there are three possibilities about the state of the refund.
Return Received – The IRS acknowledged your return and is processing
Refund Approved – The IRS accepted your refund and is arranging to issue it by a date that will be displayed on-screen.
Refund Sent – The IRS dispatched the refund to the taxpayer’s bank or the mail. The process may take 5 days for it to show in the taxpayer’s bank account or several weeks if details are sent by mail.
To get started with the “Where’s my refund?” tool, first navigate to www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund or download the IRS2GoApp in English or Spanish on the Google Play, Apple App or Amazon app stores.
To log in to check the taxpayer’s status would require him or her to furnish specific information, including
- Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN).
- Taxpayer’s filing status (single, married, joint, etc.).
- The exact dollar refund amount on his or her 2024 return.
