IT Ministry, NIXI launches BhashaNet portal to boost digital inclusion

New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched the BhashaNet portal at the Universal Acceptance (UA) Day event. The event, with the support of ICANN, emphasized the need for Universal Acceptance for a truly inclusive internet, especially for non-English speakers.

S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, highlighted India’s potential to lead in standards for universal acceptance conformance. The event included panel discussions and workshops with industry representatives sharing insights on achieving universal acceptance readiness. Sessions aimed to empower participants in making applications and systems universal acceptance compliant.

Established in 2003, NIXI aims to increase Internet penetration and adoption in India by providing infrastructure to manage and use the internet effectively. It offers services such as IXPs for Internet Exchange Points, the .IN Registry for domain identity, IRINN for IPv4 and IPv6 address adoption, and Data Centre services for data storage.

The launch of the BhashaNet portal marks a significant step towards digital inclusion and accessibility for all internet users in India, especially non-English speakers. The event’s focus on Universal Acceptance underscores the importance of making the internet truly inclusive and accessible to a diverse population.
