ITF Women’s Open: Ankita Raina, Zeel Desai make winning start in Gurugram

Top Indian women’s singles players Ankita Raina and Zeel Desai started off strong in the ITF Women’s Open Gurugram 35, advancing to the pre-quarterfinals. Ankita clinched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Akanksha Nitture, while Zeel defeated Vaidhei Chaudhari 6-3, 6-1.

Ankita, who last won a title in 2020, showcased a dominant performance with a mix of serve and strong forehand. She secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory over her compatriot in the opening round. Zeel also began impressively, winning her match 6-3, 6-1 after breaking her opponent’s serve early on.

In addition, three other Indian players – Anjali Rathi, Vaishnavi Adkar, and Madhurima Sawant – made it to the main draw after winning their final qualifying matches, increasing India’s presence in the tournament to 12 players. Both Ankita and Zeel displayed a confident and aggressive approach, setting the stage for an exciting competition ahead.

Furthermore, in the doubles round of 16, partnerships from Japan, France, and other countries showcased their skills, setting the stage for thrilling matches in the upcoming rounds. The tournament promises to be intense as players from various nations compete for the prestigious title at The Tennis Project in Gurugram.
