On April 13, 1919, there occurred an episode called the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, sometimes referred to as the Massacre of Amritsar. In the advent of the open area known as the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab province (now in Punjab state), India, British soldiers opened fire on a sizable crowd of Indians without arms that day.
Children made up some of the hundreds of fatalities and wounded. This event marked a turning moment in contemporary Indian history, inspiring Gandhi to devote himself fully to the cause of Indian independence and nationalism from British rule. There is no question that the event permanently damaged relations between India and Great Britain.
This tragedy showed the British military’s inhumane tactics when the troops shot at an unsuspecting crowd the fact that had gathered in the fenced park for the illegal public meeting without being given any advance notice by General Dyer.
About Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
People assembled in Jallianwala Bagh (Amritsar) on April 13, 1919, to demonstrate the detention of Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satya Pal, two prominent nationalists. General Dyer, a British armed forces officer, and his men abruptly invaded the park. He commanded his soldiers to shoot at the defenseless throng for ten minutes while even giving them the warning to leave, and once their ammo ran out, they fled.
By estimates from Congress, approximately 1,000 individuals died while approximately 2000 people were injured within those ten minutes of silence. The Jallianwala Bagh, a structure that’s now a nationwide memorial, still has bullet holes in its walls.
The slaughter had been planned, and Dyer proudly boasted that he accomplished it to have a “moral effect” on the populace and that he had resolved to openly shoot down every human being if they continued to gather. He wasn’t sorry at all. When he arrived in England, numerous citizens of that country raised money in his honor. Others were horrified by this horrible deed and requested an investigation.
