YouTuber James Somerton’s Suicide Note Post Goes Viral On Twitter, Reddit; Sparking Concerns Amid Plagiarism Allegations
James Somerton, a Canadian YouTuber, faced plagiarism accusations in December 2023. Concerns about his well-being escalated on Tuesday when he allegedly posted a suicide note online.
The snapshot of Somerton’s note was shared on Reddit by a user named @liloloveyou024, who reposted it from his private X (formerly Twitter) account.
Somerton used to publish video essays on Youtube on queer literature. However, he has now deleted his primary YouTube channel.
In a note he wrote,
“If this message is live, it means I scheduled it before ending things. I have videos scheduled to go out over the next couple of days.”
He expressed his wish for his co-writer, Nicholas Hergott, also known as Nick, to have his work portfolio made available online. He also mentioned that he had arranged for the ‘Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention’ to receive money from his videos as donations.
James added,
“They’ve tried very hard to pull me back, but there’s simply no life for me anymore. I’ve lost everything. … My only friend, my livelihood, my name …And it’s all my fault.”
According to Dexerto, the conclusion of the suicide letter mentions how this world would turn into a better place without James. He bid his goodbye.
YouTuber James Somerton’s Plagiarism Scandal
In December 2023, Hbomberguy aka Harris Brewis, a well-known British YouTuber posted a video of four hours and accused a fellow YouTuber, James Somerton of plagiarism.
According to Brewis, Somerton extracted small passages from online posts, articles, and other authors’ books and rearranged the sentences to make them look like authentic work.
When the British YouTuber’s video on Somerton gained more than 10 million views, the number of subscribers of Somerton came down to 255,000 from 330,000. Then, James made the majority of his YT content privately.
Reportedly, he also deactivated his account on Patreon.
In the wake of the situation, Somerton also made an apology video and shared it. However, in dismay, it was not well received by the online community. The video couldn’t convince the public, who thought the Youtuber was only apologetic for plagiarism issues. Later, he deleted his video of apology as well, reported The Sun.
As James Somerton’s latest X post with a suicide note gained traction online, netizens showed grief and care. However, no more information on James Somerton’s current condition is known yet.
