Jay Shah congratulates India, the inaugural winners of the 1984 Asia Cup

New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) – BCCI secretary Jay Shah congratulated Team India for winning the inaugural Asia Cup in 1984 by defeating Pakistan in the final. India, led by Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny, emerged victorious after defending a target of 189 runs.

The first Asia Cup in 1984 featured Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan advanced to the final after defeating Sri Lanka in their matches. India’s successful defense of 189 runs was powered by Surinder Khanna’s 56 against Pakistan, with Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny emerging as joint-highest wicket-takers.

Jay Shah took to ‘X’ to express his congratulations, stating, “On this day in 1984, Team India won the inaugural Asia Cup with Surinder Khanna’s pivotal 56 against Pakistan. Ravi Shastri’s left-arm spin and Roger Binny’s seam bowling solidified India’s success.”

India posted a total of 188 for 4 in Sharjah, with Surinder Khanna’s 56 and Sandeep Patil’s 43 being crucial contributions. Team India has since become the most successful team in Asia Cup history, having won the title seven times, followed by Sri Lanka with five wins and Pakistan with two.
