J&K CEO Encourages Everyone to Participate in Election, calling it the Biggest Celebration of Democracy

Jammu, March 19 (IANS) – The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of J&K, P.K. Pole, emphasized the importance of upholding the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) to ensure fair elections in the UT. He stated that any violations of the MCC will result in appropriate action to maintain integrity in the electoral process.

Pole highlighted that the MCC serves as a guideline for all stakeholders involved in the election process. He specifically pointed out the prohibitions against making provocative statements, inciting hatred, using abusive language, and attacking the personal character of political rivals. Violations of these guidelines are punishable under relevant laws.

The CEO expressed concern over the decline in political speeches that spread mutual hatred and disharmony. He warned that such behavior goes against the MCC and will prompt immediate action from the Commission. Detailed penal actions are outlined to prevent such violations, including provisions under the RP Act and IPC.

In reinforcing the boundaries of freedom of speech, Pole reminded political leaders and candidates that their expressions must not transgress the limits of decency, morality, or public order. He stressed that actions promoting enmity or attacking the country’s integrity or judiciary can lead to disqualification.

To ensure compliance with the MCC, the Commission implements a stringent surveillance system, monitoring public events through videography. Stakeholders are required to follow guidelines and seek permission for public gatherings, with legal action taken against those who violate the rules. The Commission also has the authority to derecognize repeat offenders under specific provisions.

In conclusion, Pole reiterated the Commission’s commitment to fair and peaceful elections, urging all parties to uphold the principles of democracy and abide by the MCC. The enforcement of guidelines and penalties aims to create a conducive environment for voters to exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.
