Celebrity Chef John Besh Returns with New Restaurant After High-Profile Scandal in 2017

Celebrity chef John Besh is stepping back into the spotlight after a seven-year break, with plans to launch a new restaurant, Delacroix Fish Camp & Bar, at the Spanish Plaza in New Orleans.

The eatery, set to replace Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, will feature regional seafood dishes and an oyster bar. The opening is slated for early 2025, just in time for the Super Bowl festivities.

Besh’s return, however, is shadowed by the controversy that led to his exit from the culinary scene.

John Besh’s 2017 Scandal Explained

In 2017, over 25 women came forward accusing Besh and his company, Besh Restaurant Group (BRG), of fostering a toxic work environment rife with sexual harassment.

An eight-month investigation by The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com revealed numerous accounts of inappropriate behaviour, from unwanted advances to claims of a “long-term unwelcome sexual relationship” with Besh himself.

The scandal resulted in his resignation as CEO, though he remained involved as a partner, while the company was rebranded as BRG Hospitality.

John Besh publicly acknowledged his “moral failings” and accepted responsibility, though he characterized the relationship in question as consensual.

His statement highlighted the personal and professional regrets tied to his actions, which he admitted were unacceptable for someone in his position.

Following the scandal, BRG implemented new protocols aimed at addressing workplace complaints, hoping to prevent further incidents.

Despite the past, John Besh’s new venture has generated buzz, particularly with his longtime business partner Octavio Mantilla assisting behind the scenes.

As Delacroix Fish Camp & Bar prepares to open its doors, all eyes will be on how Besh’s return is received by the public and the culinary community in New Orleans.
