Post the endorsement of Kamala Harris by Joe Biden, she has been the subject of memes and the most notable is the Coconut meme which is being used by Democrats to show their support for the Vice President.
What’s at the root of the Kamala Harris-coconut tree meme?
The story of Harris’ candidacy supported with a symbol and a meme: coconut tree dates back to a speech given by the Vice President at a White House event in 2023.
A coconut is often used to refer to a brown-skinned person with white inside. However, this is not the case with Kamala Harris who is of Indian origin.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis was the first to tweet his support for Harris and he followed it with three emojis, a coconut, a palm tree and the American flag.
The next was Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz who said,
âMadam Vice President, we are ready to helpâ.
It was followed with a picture Schatz climbing a coconut tree.
An American political action committee (PAC), EMILY’s List, which helps to facilitate the election of Democratic female candidates also supported Harris in a tweet and added a coconut and a tree to its username.
There were several humorous memes by netizens and one such meme read,
“Kamala falling from a coconut tree now that Biden is out.”
Kamala Harris And The Coconut Tree
In 2023 Kamala Harris delivered a speech in the White House to increase opportunities for Hispanic Americans.
Harris emphasized that the focus should be on the young people but must not neglect the needs of families, teachers and communities since none of us live in isolation.
Then, came the moment of the coconut anecdote.
Harris said,
“My mother … would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I donât know whatâs wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’
She added “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before youâ
After the disastrous Presidential debate between Biden and Trump Harris supporters hit the internet with full force and came with coconut trees.
